Box Office Report: 'Super 8' on Track for $35 Million Opening Weekend

Paramount’s Super 8 — directed by J.J. Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg — topped the Friday box office with an estimated $12 million. The period sci-fi pic is now on course to win the weekend with $35 million.

Including $1 million in Thursday sneaks, Super 8 is expected to finish Sunday with a four-day cume of $36 million.

Super 8 drew a B+ CinemaScore, while 71 percent of the audience was over the age of 25. That wasn’t a surprise to Paramount, since the movie is Abrams’ homage to the Spielberg films he grew up on. Males made up 56 percent of the audience.

Twentieth Century Fox’s X-Men: First Class came in No. 2 in its second Friday, grossing an estimated $8 million. The prequel is on track to earn $27 million for the weekend, only a 49 percent decline from its opening frame.

Warner Bros.’ The Hangover Part II jumped the $200 million mark on Friday, grossing an estimated $6 million to push its cume to $204 million.

Set in 1979, Super 8 tells the story of a group of kids who are filming a home movie when there’s a violent train crash. When unexplained events start to threaten their town, they begin to suspect something inhuman escaped from the train. The film stars Joel Courtney, Elle Fanning, Kyle Chandler, Ryan Lee, Riley Griffiths, Gabriel Basso and Zach Mills.

Paramount maintains Super 8 doesn’t need a big opening, since it cost $50 million to produce, far less than other summer studio films. The studio has been predicting an opening in the $25 million to $30 million range.

The studio partnered with Twitter to host the paid sneaks on Thursday in a first for the giant social media site.
Paramount said 100,000 people participated in the Twitter promotion, and that it met its goal of creating a vocal group of proponents who will plug the sci-fi film.

Additionally, Super 8 earned $500,000 in midnight runs. That figure was rolled into Friday’s gross.

It’s looking like domestic box office revenues will be down compared to the same weekend a year ago when Sony’s The Karate Kid opened to $55.7 million.

Local Moviegoers Say ‘Super 8’ Is Super Fun

STEUBENVILLE - Weirton resident George Charnie Jr. regretted drinking so many glasses of iced tea before going to see "Super 8" on Friday.

But he enjoyed the movie so much that even the urgent need for a restroom break couldn't tear him out of the theater.

"It will have you on the edge of your seat. ... You can't get up to go to the bathroom, and I had to go," Charnie said while standing outside the Carmike Cinemas at the Fort Steuben Mall in Steubenville.

Charnie and hundreds of others flocked to the theater to see the movie, filmed mostly in Weirton, on its nationwide opening day. Many were already buying tickets for today because the movie was quickly selling out.

"I liked it a lot. It was well written. ... I think it's the best film of the year," Charnie added. "The kids really acted well together."

"Super 8" is set in the fictional town of Lillian, Ohio, and is described as science fiction/fantasy film. It is rated PG-13, and has received rave reviews from professional movie critics. The plot involves a group of young friends who witness a train crash that results in a series of mysterious events.

Jack Deemer, 10, of Weirton watched the movie with his grandmother Shirley Kearns of Wellsburg. For Deemer, the special effects "and tanks" made "Super 8" a hit for him.

"It was good. There was a lot of action and it was nice to see Weirton," Kearns added.

Diana and Paul Cunningham of Weirton described the movie as "fantastic" and "fun to watch."

"I hope everybody that doesn't live here will go see it where they live," Diana Cunningham said.

Tyger Elmore said it was exciting to see her hometown, Weirton, on the big screen.

"It was fantastic. ... I give it five stars," said Elmore, who was accompanied by son Jakobie, 2, and Aaron Davis of Weirton.

Davis noted he enjoyed the special effects and said he was "happy to see Weirton."

"I'm happy they did something around here, and that we're getting a little recognition. I'll watch it again. There were bits and pieces that I missed," Davis said.

While watching the movie, Tom Prevost couldn't help but think back to the filming that occurred on South 17th Street where he lives. He said it was interesting to see how the special effects were added to the scenes.

"They filmed by our house. ... They blew up a house down the street," Prevost said, while showing a digital photo on his phone of a tank parked in front of his home during filming last year in Weirton.

His wife, Doreen Prevost, said her favorite scenes occurred in a grave yard where she often walks to.

New Cumberland resident Michele Hudson watched the movie with her daughter, Shelby, 15, who said she "liked the whole thing."

"It was good. I watched a lot of the filming," Michele Hudson said. "To see it all put together was cool. I had no idea what the storyline was because there were so many rumors."
